This is the most produced weapon OMNI has, the Bergman FEB 60 and FEB 60A1. It uses the Kel-Tec forward ejection system and uses standard 5.7mm cased ammunition. This is OMNI's most basic assault rifle, intended for use with conscripted soldiers, known as the Vanguard forces. As such it's very simple to maintain and operate- instruction panels cover the weapon, and any switch which usually needs to be pressed or pulled during operation is colored bright red. The weapon has a built in reflex sight which can be removed.
The B-55 was OMNI's initial service rifle from the very beginning of the colonies' incarnation. It was phased out after WWIII and replaced with weapons better suited to paramilitary uses. Once war resurfaced, OMNI brought its old B-55s back out of storage. New production lines of updated weapons were immediately started up, now producing the B-FEB 60 and B-Feb 60A1.
The trigger guard serves as the safety switch, and folds down to free the seer and allow the weapon to fire. After that, the trigger is a double action affair which ensures further safety. The fire rate control switch is just above the grip, easily accessible by the thumb of the firing hand, and the weapon can fire in either semi-auto or 3-round burst.
To increase ease of reloading, the magazine well has a rail which extends out and joins the grip, allowing more instinctive reloading by sliding the magazine in just below the firing hand. Like the Kel-Tec RFB, the weapon ejects spent cases forward above the barrel.
All these factors culminate in a weapon which is easy to use and effectively idiot-proof, and can be marginally effective with little or no training.
Thanks!
Well, it's a combination of researching existing weapons that fit the role or look I'm going for, then using those as a base while adding features and details that make the weapon fit its role more. For instance, I had to make a rifle that was very basic and easy to use, and was made by OMNI. That restricts influence to American and German weapons. I used the Kel-Tec RFB rifle as a base and included a collapsible stock, easier loading system, and lasers to make aiming easier. Since cases are ejected out the front of the RFB, it's easier on the firer, so that was fine. Since, in the story, the weapon is based on one which came out about 300 years ago, I basically gave the weapon a G3 barrel shroud and upper receiver, which fits the weapon as it's the path by which the cases are ejected. Then I just added the smaller details, like the labeling, and the folding reflex sight, and the way the grip is attached to the magazine well. And that's it.
When I first saw this picture, I thought it looked sweet but highly impractical. After reading the description, it all makes sense.
I love all the thought you put into idiot-proofing the weapon for little or no training. The blue and bright red isn't the best camouflage, but they're just conscript soldiers.
The coloring is great. What program do you use?
